Chapter 11

Jade checks everything is ready and turns to Eira asking, "ok before we get started, have you ever prepared a gingerbread house before?". Eira replies, "I did.. a long time ago; you know my mom does all the baking". Jade agrees saying, "yep moms have a special power for baking and cooking". They soon begin to mix the ingredients and bake it; after leaving it to cool they begin to shape the gingerbread house; after decorating both Eira and Jade feel tired however they both take pictures of their products; Eira says, "wow.. we did a great job! it smells delicious...". Eira was about to break a piece to eat when Jade stopped her saying, "bestie, what do you think you are doing?". Eira replies, "I'm going to try it, Jade". Jade says, "no way, you can eat the cookies we made but not the gingerbread house". Eira asks, "why did we make the house if you don't want to eat it?". Jade replies, "I love to bake, assemble and it's delightful to watch". Eira feels annoyed munching into a cookie while looking at the gingerbread house; Jade says, "bestie, please stop pouting, Colden will likely break it apart when I leave this beauty". Jade's phone rings and she heads out to take the call just as Cherie comes in asking, "what's that aromatic smell?". Eira hands her a cookie which she enjoys eating and replies, "me and Jade baked cookies and this gingerbread house". Cherie asks, "can you give me a hand to prepare Christmas dinner?". Eira replies, "actually I was thinking of checking up on my dad".

Cherie understands and lets Eira go before saying, "JADE GET OFF the phone and come and give your mama a hand!". Eira heads to her room and calls her mom who says, "hey sweetie how are you?". Eira replies, "hey mom, how's dad?". Beatrice replies, "recovering and doing better". Matthew calls her away just as Stephanie takes the phone saying, "hey sis.. mom's just tending to dad". Stephanie asks, “how are you feeling sis? I know yesterday was a shock". Eira asks, "do you remember what today is, sis?". Stephanie replies, "yeah, it's Nona's anniversary". Eira puts the camera on and sees Stephanie beside a photo of her grandma with a candle below it; Stephanie says, "it still doesn't sink in... nearly eight years today...".

Stephanie shows Eira a photo of them when they were younger at the hospital with Grandma, a flashback shows; 'years ago, Grandma Zara was in the hospital due to leukaemia... one Christmas day Stephanie and Eira were sitting by Zara's side at the hospital... Eira asks, "Nona, how are you feeling?". Zara coughs replying, "I'm going to be fine; I am happy that my two granddaughters are here to celebrate with me". Stephanie replies, “anything for you, Nona". Eira opens a bag revealing Christmas cookies in which Zara tries to eat it however feels sick. Stephanie wipes Zara's mouth and rubs her back gently. Eira says, "sorry Nona"; she begins to cry as Zara says, "don't cry, sweetie".
